The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 12,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. The regiment delivers animal handling training for more than 400 personnel a year, as well as role specific training for hundreds of animals. The regiment comprises of Canine, Equine and Veterinary squadrons and provides a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment like no other! As a Groom you will be responsible for ensuring that the welfare standards for our horses is met and maintained in line with Defence policy.
Military Working Horses have played a vital role within the Armed Forces for centuries, their welfare and training is fundamental so it is important that they receive the highest level of both at the Defence Animal Training Regiment.

Job Description
This position is based within Veterinary Training Squadron (VTS) and holds responsibility for ensuring the required standard of horse care is met, with additional attention to the feet and bedding of long-term inpatients. This requires you to be responsible for your own health and safety and that of the animals you are providing care for. The role is physical in nature and can be completed as part of a team or by lone working.
Key Responsibilities:
Train new VTS yard workers to the required standard in all areas of equine welfare and husbandry.
Feeding, grooming, handling, and exercising horses of various breeds, sizes and temperaments.
Assist the veterinary team, which will involve the practice of restraint and manipulation of all breeds of equine.
Ensuring the required standard of horse care is met, with additional attention to the feet and bedding of long-term inpatients.
Care and maintenance of equipment and for the training of new VTS yard workers in all areas of equine welfare and husbandry.
Ensure that feeds are made up and oversee the feeding.
Supervise the bathing and grooming of the VTS yard horses.
Stable yards are kept clean and tidy and all horses are secured at the end of the working day.
Liaise with Veterinary staff regarding exercise/build up plans.
Exercise the horses as and when required (non-riding ex).
Present horses for veterinary inspection and administer treatments as instructed by veterinary staff.
Move horses to and from the Veterinary Hospital for treatment.
Supervise care of horses turned out at grass and sand paddocks.
Issue bedding, forage and feed to both horses in the yard and fields.
Ensure equipment faults are identified and reported to the Hospital Manager.

Skills Required:
Must be qualified to BHS Stage 2 or equivalent.
Hold a full Cat B driving licence
