Location Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk – at Barton Stud (boarding broodmares, young stock, foaling & sales prep) 2026 Breeding Season Role Summary We are looking for a reliable and dedicated individual to join our team for the upcoming season as a Foaling Night Watch Person. You will be primarily responsible for overnight monitoring of broodmares in the final stages of pregnancy and during foaling, ensuring the safety and welfare of both mare and foal, and supporting the stud team through the night. Key Responsibilities Monitor mares overnight (including bedding, stalling, and checking frequently) to detect signs of labour or foaling behaviour. Assist during foaling when required, under the supervision of the stud team and vet. Provide immediate post-foaling care support (cleaning foal, ensuring mare/foal bond, observing for complications). Keep accurate records of mare/foal condition, time of foaling, any incidents, and handover information to day staff. Maintain high standards of stable cleanliness and safety at all times. Be on-call overnight according to rota for the foaling barn, ready to respond swiftly to alerts. Liaise with the veterinary practice and senior staff on any concerns or emergencies. Contribute to general stud duties as required by the night-shift team (mucking out, feeding, turnout, general yard assistance) if workload allows. Required Skills & Attributes Previous experience with broodmares, foaling, or youngstock preferred (but not mandatory). Keen observation skills and the ability to act decisively in potential emergency/foaling situations. Comfortable working overnight shifts and living on or adjacent to the stud premises. Physically fit and able to move quickly, handle large animals, and undertake stable duties. Excellent communication skills and able to hand over detailed and accurate information at shift change. A calm and measured personality under pressure. Good teamwork ethic, reliability, and a responsible attitude.
